Review of Educational Research, 75, 285–328.

Summary

This paper explores how students from kindergarten through 12th grade use the web for learning and the challenges they encounter when searching for information online. Although the web offers a vast amount of information, students often struggle to find reliable sources and determine the accuracy of what they find. The authors review various studies and theories, highlighting the crucial role teachers play in helping students improve their search skills. Students need guidance from their teachers to develop more effective search strategies and assess the credibility of information. The paper also calls for further research to explore how the web can be more effectively integrated into education.

Evaluation

The paper provides a good overview of the research on the challenges students face when using the web for learning. It highlights the problems students have, especially with finding reliable sources and judging their credibility. The authors make an important point that the web doesn’t automatically improve learning and that teachers are essential in guiding students. However, the paper could have included more practical suggestions, such as using advanced Google search techniques, checking website reviews, cross-referencing (comparing information from multiple reliable sources to verify accuracy), looking at the domain (e.g., .edu, .gov) to assess credibility, checking the publication date for relevance, and reading multiple viewpoints to gain a balanced understanding. Additionally, tools like fact-checking websites that flag biased or unreliable content could help students critically evaluate web resources.

Reflection

Students increasingly rely on the Internet for information. I believe teachers should guide students in evaluating and using the information they find online. As educators, we must enhance teaching by balancing technology use with strong educational practices, ensuring students not only copy information but also think critically about whether they are gathering accurate or inaccurate information.

With the rise of tools like ChatGPT, it is even more crucial for students to understand that these technologies can be powerful learning aids when used correctly. Students need to recognize that the quality of the output depends on how effectively they prompt (frame their questions) the AI tool or search engine. Technology will always follow the instructions given, and the results are limited to the request made. Therefore, students must develop strong skills in asking clear, thoughtful questions and be mindful of how they frame their searches to obtain meaningful and relevant information.

Kuiper, E., Volman, M., & Terwel, J.
